presentation:
If the steamy, sun-drenched streets of Santiago sound perfect right about now, the Maude Kerns Art Center is offering a short fix. In conjunction with the MKAC's current exhibition, The Painters of Santiago, Cuba, five different speakers will share their cultural experiences in Cuba. Cuban American Brian Marquez presents a video montage, Cuban American vocalist Jesse Marquez performs, Oliver Thorton shares slides from his recent trip, the Cuban American Garcia family shares memories, recipes and art and Cuban African American Deseree Tetrou presents a perspective on Africans in Cuban society. See Friday Calendar.

music:
In this season of unnaturally green-tinted carnations and glittery green frosting atop cupcakes decorated with plastic clovers, it's nice to see something that's just slightly different. The Scottish Battlefield Band qualifies. Named after the Glasgow suburb of Battlefield, the band has been touring for 30 years and has just released its 20th album, Leaving Friday Harbor. Band members are inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music and fueled by the vibrancy of today's Scottish cultural scene, which they've helped create. The band plays everything from "Jesse 'The Body' Ventura's Reel" to more traditional dialect songs at North Eugene High School. See Tuesday Calendar.

music:
The Santa Barbara News-Press says about David Lindley, "If music is the universal language, he speaks more dialects than anybody else." Lindley plays everything from Celtic to Malagasy to bluegrass on an assortment of stringed instruments including the oud, bouzouki, saz and numerous guitars. Since he began recording in 1967, he has appeared on hundreds of albums and his slide guitar is recognizable on many rock classics, particularly in the work of Jackson Browne. Headliner Lindley is followed by the New Orleans seven-piece, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, at the WOW Hall. See Tuesday Calendar.
