THIS WEEK AT THE
CLUBS:

Swearing
at Motorists
"Swearing at Motorists create four-track pop that takes simple, but infectious
melodies and adds haunting harmonies, minimalistic instrumentation, and abstract
lyrics," says their promo. The band is guitarist Dave Doughman and drummer Don
Thrasher, both from Dayton, Ohio. Saturday, John Henry's. |

Passout
Kings
Holding the title of Eugene's best loved punk band, the Kings dish it out this week
at the "Night of True Punk Rock" show hosted by Campus radio station KWVA.
Also on the bill are former Eugeneans Spread Eagle, and headlining is Portland's
Poison Idea. Saturday, WOW Hall. |

North Mississippi
All-Stars
The All-Stars have a sound that falls between Delta Blues
and Southern Rock. If you need a term, how about swamp rock? Time Magazine
called the band "young rascals with ancient souls...playing blues that precede
air conditioning and indoor plumming." Friday, Wild Duck. |

for manufacturing methamphetamine, these guys from L.A. will be at the Wild

on Friday.

Fretboard maniac Danny Barnes will be back at Sam Bond's Garage
the 8th, banjo in hand, and he sent along a list of eight reasons to come see him.
I'm partial to #1, which notes that "It's pleasant to sit with your friends
and drink good beer and listen to good music, in a nice environment." Damn skippy.
#3 observes that "the volume is a level conducive to a good time," which,
of course, would vary significantly from the Kiss to the Tuck and Patti fan, and
then there's #5, which attests that "Barnes has been practicing for the gig."
I won't bore you with his public-transportation-intensive travel plans down from
Port Hadlock, Wash., but will add that Barnes promises to play all night.
On the 9th, the L.A. trio Acetone will open the show by
Galactic frontman Theryl "Houseman" de'Clouet at the Wild Duck.
The latest Acetone CD, York Blvd., is its second for Neil Young's imprint
Vapor Records. York Blvd. is a super likeable work of lush pastoral guitars,
a laid-back roots sensibility, and a winning re-working of late '60s/early '70s progressive
trip-rock, flavored with some classic-rock motifs. Acetone keeps things from ever
getting pompous or draggy. From the pedal-steel-accented shuffle of the appropriately-cheery
"Things Are Gonna Be Alright," the Monkees-tinged "Wonderful World"
(is it me, or are these guys kinda "up"?), and the remotely James Gang-ian
"Its A Lie," it's very winning stuff.
Sad news that Salem's John Fahey went to that great gig
in the sky recently. Fahey awakened many souls to the majesty of the fingerpicked
acoustic guitar, and his artistry will be greatly missed.
This Week: Oakland's Sourpuss is at John Henry's the 9th.
The latest effort, Prison Charisma, offers pop-grunge (punge), with a lot
of sexual baggage: "Fetish Boy," "The Letch" (sic). Hey, we like
to keep it family in this column, boys. Murmur and West by God open.
Ska, rock and swing from locals The Lounge Derbies, The Courtesy Clerks
and The West Coast Rhythm Kings are at the WOW Hall the 9th. Papas Soul
Kitchen provides funk at Taylor's the 10th. Tacoma's Latin Expression
will likewise be playing the 10th, at the Wild Duck, for the salsa-inclined. Local
salsero Mario Mora will offer free salsa dance lessons prior to the show. Also on
the 10th, punk pervades the WOW with Poison Idea, The Pass Out Kings,
and Spread Eagle. And then there's the frightening specter of Accordians
Anonymous, who assault Sam Bond's on the 10th. Biggish names in Portland and
Seattle, respectively, The Baseboard Heaters and Mountain Con (whose
praises have been sung in this column before) are at John Henry's the 11. The nearly
inescapable String Cheese Incident is back in town the 12th for a show at
the Hult Center. The Cheesers say they sold 21,000 tix for their three dates in Portland
around New Year's, so they must have the twirl inducement firmly in hand, as it were.
They've been recording a studio album in Austin with Steve Berlin of Los Lobos producing.
Local trumpeter Tim Clarke will appear with his newly formed group
of allstars The Tim Clarke Soul-tet when they bring their straight ahead and
acid (wait for it) jazz to John Henry's the 13th. More punk is at the WOW the 13th,
with A.F.I., The Explosion, and The Snukas. The spoken word
of John Trudell is at the WOW Hall the 15th, and the retro-jazz of the quintet
Hot Town Jubilee, which brings its 30s "hot jazz" and swing to Sam
Bond's is the same night.

When a banjo player puts out a solo record, what do you expect?
Lots of picking and frailing along to bluegrass standards? Maybe a country song thrown
in for good measure? Well, when the banjo player in question happens to be Danny
Barnes, all you can count on is expecting the unexpected.
Barnes, best known for his banjo picking with the Austin-based-alt-country-bluegrass-punk
band Bad Livers, released a solo album, Minor Dings, last year on Cavity Search
Records. The recording was done entirely in Barnes's home, and was originally released
on his own Minner Bucket label back in 1998. Barnes made 100 copies of the album
to sell to fans off his website. "I charged $25 apiece, all the artwork was
hand lettered and everything," says Barnes. "The record has already
paid for itself."
Barnes's friends at Cavity Search didn't let the story end there.
"The Cavity Search boys and I thought it would be cool to put it out again,
in a re-mastered, re-edited form," says Barnes. "We felt there was some
cool stuff on there, that some of my hardcore fans were really going to like."
Indeed, "cool stuff" certainly abounds on Minor Dings.
Track 1 is an acoustic, country-rock tune called "No Time Flat." Barnes
sings the song's refrain, "I'm not different, just sleeping," in a slightly
nasal, but not unpleasant Southern drawl to the accompaniment of an acoustic guitar
and sparse percussion that could be Barnes stomping his foot. But just as you're
preparing for more of the same, the record switches gears completely and goes into
a moody and slightly ominous instrumental with cello, banjo and keyboard entitled
"My Life Crumbled."
From there we go to "Zaccheus," an account of the vertically
challenged Biblical character who climbed a tree to get a better look at "his
savior." The tune is one part traditional bluegrass and two parts Delta Blues,
and either my ears are deceiving me or he's playing slide banjo through the choruses.
No two songs on the album are the same, and genres include everything
from the straight-up, Randy Travis-sounding country tune, "This Ain't a Good
Time," to my personal favorite, "Cellophane Thing," which has Barnes
singing in a high falsetto that sounds like it belongs either in the mid-'70s or
on a Beck album, right after "Deborah." The song slowly rocks out with
heavy electric guitar, blurry keyboard string sounds, bass, drums and lots of reverb.
Barnes himself is just as versatile as his album. The 39-year-old
Texas native has three bands in addition to his solo career, and is preparing to
release another Cavity Search album, Duet for Clarinet and Goat, a combined
effort with Portland resident and former Golden Delicious lead man, Pete Krebs. Barnes
also recently finished recording a book on tape entitled The Cavalry at Gettysburg,
Part 1: The Armies Collide. "It's a three-hour historical account of the
battle, with the latest academic research into the various events," says Barnes.
"It's like having me tell you a very long detailed story. Some people like my
voice, kind of a southern baritone."
In 1998, Barnes moved from Austin to just north of Seattle, where,
in addition to playing music, recording albums, books and soundtracks for movies
4 Barnes composed the music for the Richard Linklater film, The Newton Boys,
and will record the soundtrack for an upcoming Peter Fonda movie 4 he lectures at
the nearby University of Washington. The topic last week was "Banjo in Modern
Music," subtitled "The Plight of the Modern Banjoist." Barnes got
the lecturing job because "the professors [at UW] come to see me play in Seattle,"
he says.
The last time Barnes performed in Eugene, the audience listened
enthralled as he picked the banjo with a speed and accuracy that most players will
never know. Barnes is truly a gifted performer, and anyone interested in just plain
good music will hear it at his next Eugene gig.
Danny Barnes plays Sam Bond's Thursday, March 8. The show starts
at 9 pm, and there is a $4 cover charge at the door.
