spoken word:
John Trudell did not set out to be a poet. While growing up near the Santee Sioux reservation, his contempt for the "American way of life," poverty and racism grew as he did. As the national chairman for the American Indian Movement, he drew attention from the FBI, who compiled a 17,000-page file on him. Twelve hours after leading a march to FBI headquarters in protest of the FBI's war against Indians, his house was burned to the ground 4 killing his wife Tina, their three children and Tina's mother. Trudell withdrew from the world and became a poet. His most recent album, Blue Indians, critically examines world environmental issues, human and Native American rights. Trudell performs spoken word at the WOW Hall. "In music, lyrics are written to what the math of the music allows us to say. Poetry is what we need to say" he says. See Thursday, March 15 Calendar.

music:
The Eugene Symphony's "Year of the Piano" continues with Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3. British pianist Leon McCawley is up for the challenges of this legendary work. Rachmaninoff's personal favorite is filled with fiendishly difficult challenges for the pianist. Before launching into the Rachmaninoff, the orchestra warms up with Dvorák's charming Symphony No. 8. There's a sneak preview on Wednesday and a pre-concert talk on Thursday. See Wednesday and Thursday, March 15.

opera:
Risking your neck for love has always been considered romantic. But in Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado, heads are really rolling since the Mikado made flirting a capital offense. The Eugene Opera performs the popular operetta with the help of Frederick Reeder as both Stage Director and in the role of Ko Ko and Julia Hunt as Yum Yum. The Hult performance also features the colorful and playful scenery by Disney designer Don Carson. See Friday Calendar.
