![]() This Week's Calendar | Galleries | March Kid's Calendar dance:Classical ballet with tutus and a love story or jazz dance choreographed to the sound of Curtis Salgado's blues? You won't have to choose, thanks to The Eugene Ballet's double program. First, statues come to life and disembodied hands serve tea in Toni Pimble's Beauty and the Beast. Based on Jean Cocteau's 1946 avant-garde film, Pimble's ballet hasn't been performed since 1991. After intermission, be ready for something a little different. Pimble's Bluesman is a dance piece set to Curtis Salgado's music. Salgado and the members of his blues band will perform on stage with the dancers. Salgado, who introduced John Belushi to the blues and was one of the inspirations for The Blues Brothers film, will perform new music from his latest CD, Soul Activated. See Saturday Calendar. conference:This year's Public Interest Environmental Law Conference will be the first without the visionary conservationist David Brower. A slideshow at the opening address will honor Brower and his work. Even without Brower, the focus of the 19th annual conference will be "Keeping the Issues Alive." The PIELC is the largest gathering of its kind in the world, with 3,000 attorneys, activists and concerned citizens invited to attend the keynote speeches, workshops and panel discussions on everything from saving the Arctic wilderness to living more simply. Julia Butterfly Hill, Terry Tempest Williams and David Korten are just a few of the keynote speakers. See Thursday and calendar sidebar. benefit:Eugeneans love to eat for a good cause. And this month's First Friday Art Walk gives us another chance to fill our bowls 4 and the bowls of others. Empty Bowls, the popular annual benefit for FOOD for Lane County, is at White Lotus Gallery. Last year, all 700 bowls sold in just an hour and a half. This year, 1,000 bowls have been donated by members of Local Clay, the regional affiliate of the Oregon Potters Association. Buyers are limited to four bowls each, and every bowl comes with a coupon for a free bowl of soup at selected local restaurants. The proceeds help FOOD for Lane County fill the empty bowls of 20 percent of Lane County's population. See Friday Calendar. |
