THIS WEEK AT THE
CLUBS:
 |
|
Susan McKeown
Nay, Paddy, this is not your father's Celtic music! The Irish-born New Yorker, McKeown,
uses her rich contralto to mix rock, jazz and lots of originality with the beautiful
melodies of her homeland. Sunday, WOW
Hall. |

Marca Cassity
"Marca Cassity moved to Boulder three years ago, ritualistically tatooed a guitar
on her left forearm and declared herself an artist for the rest of time," says
the first line of her promo. Look out for "a combination of crazy stage antics,
power strumming and acoustic disco." Monday,
Chez Ray's. |

This local jazz quartet is managing to keep pretty busy
with two shows this weekend. Looks like their future's so bright they've gotta wear
shades... except maybe for the middle guy. Friday, Jo Federigo's; Saturday, Piccolo. |

Some new names roll
into town this week.
By Dave
Gingold
Boulder folker Marca Cassity will be in town the 26th at Chez
Rays, opening for Libby Kirkpatrick. It's unfortunate that the first thing
Cassity's publicity tells us about is the (apparently nifty) guitar tattoo on her
forearm. The second thing is about Cassity's 10 years working as a nurse "in
ghettos, bombed out buildings and emergency rooms" and here some depth begins
to emerge.
With an eponymous CD awash in sincerity, emphatic delivery and
the occasional disco foray, Cassity shows a gravity perhaps counterbalanced by her
promised "crazy stage antics." She has hosted "Women From Mars"
4 women singer-songwriter showcases around Boulder, named after the weekly radio
show she does on Boulder AM and the web.
Originally from Ponca City, Okla., Cassity has songs called "Timothy"
4 about the Oklahoma City bombing, and a bluesy rocker "Railroad Daddy,"
interpolating "I've Been Working on the Railroad." And it turns out her
dad really was a Santa Fe freight conductor.
The 28th brings Art of Flying to Sam Bond's Garage. The
band's CD One Eye Full of Lamp is atmospheric, voraciously eclectic, momentarily
Floydian or Beefheartesque and thoroughly brilliant. Poetry abounds in the gems of
this collection. Check out "Mimicry": "I alone have compassed the
circuit of heaven, rode the big bulls and birthed the sea, sewn wings and sails and
ladders, oh little me." AOF's David and Anne Costanza have been making music
together for 20 years. They used to be The Lords of Howling, and they continue to
work with a couple of ex-Camper Van Beethoven-ers in Dent. Now based in New Mexico,
where they still type on typewriters, magically enough, they will be bringing a full
band through for what promises to be a scintillating evening. The Tea Totallers
open.
Ramona the Pest is at Sam Bond's the 22nd, with Deadweight
opening, maybe. Seattle singer-songwriter Alex Woodard, a hearlandy rocker,
will do acoustic renderings of songs from his CD Nowhere Near Here at Cafe
Paradiso the 22nd, prior to a local songwriters' showcase hosted by Mare Wakefield.
The 23rd brings Cake splinter band Deathray back to John Henry's, with girl
groups The Kirby Grips (that's Brit for bobby pins, I learned) and former
locals Spread Eagle. Also on the 23rd, rap footnote 2 Live Crew is
at the WOW Hall, along with DJ Deepthroat. And at Sam Bond's the 24th, Peter
Wilde, Dan Jones and Tom Burris perform.
Burris sent along a CD EP entitled Jabbering Trout, and
it is as brilliant and promising a work as I've come across in ages. "Lifetime"
starts it off with the kind of strong melodic pop that makes something rise up in
your chest that wants to burst out, and reminds you of why rock and roll still works,
even as the world tries to kill it through avarice and ineptitude. This song should
be a huge hit, if there is any justice in the world. The rest of the EP is winning
work as well. Burris will be back at Sam Bond's the following night, the 25th, with
Laura Kemp.
Rebbesoul, also known as Bruce Burger, will be at the UO
Hillel the 25th with his band Common Tongue. Formerly an LA studio guitarist
known for his accurate simulations of Hendrix, Clapton and Santana, Burger got into
his own thing, which turned out to be blending traditional Jewish music with world
sounds. And it's a successful enough approach to find him playing special Shabbat
services at NYC's hipster hole the Knitting Factory.
Madison, Wisc., buzz band trio Rainer Maria (yeah, after
the poet Rilke) is at John Henry's the 27th, with Mike Kinsella opening. The
28th brings Irish songstress Susan McKeown & the Chanting House back to
the WOW Hall.
