The American Cancer Society estimates that 193,700 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the U.S. in 2001. Amazing Grace, a dance-theater piece choreographed by Bonnie Simoa, explores the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of dealing with breast cancer. Several local artists have joined their talents to honor the strength of the individuals who are affected by the disease. Mary Seereiter's dance performance revolves around her personal experience with the disease. Barbara Myrick, who has been free from breast cancer for six years, dances an autobiographical piece centering on the journal she began writing for her 4-year-old son when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994. Local musician Jeff Defty composed the music; vocalists Kimberly McConnell and Penny Merritt sing, Judith "Sparky" Roberts, Wind Kim and Bonnie Simoa perform and photographs by Raku Mayers will be projected during the three-night performance at LCC. See Thursday, Feb. 15 Calendar.

If you've been inspired by the graceful martial arts moves demonstrated in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Oregon Asian Celebration offers an opportunity for more. Kyung-Ju Wha, grandmaster of the International Taek Gyeon Center and the highest-ranked martial artist in Korea, demonstrates his skill with eight other highly-ranked Masters and Junior Masters. Taek Gyeon is the ancient martial art of Korea and the predecessor to modern Tae Kwon Do. This year's festival features cultural dances, art exhibits, workshops on bulb carving, flower arranging, Asian cooking and more at the Lane County Fairgrounds. See Saturday.

film:
He's been called the "Pope of Trash," "Prince of Puke," "Sultan of Sleaze" and the "Baron of Bad Taste." But these descriptions only encourage John Waters to boast, "It's hard to offend three generations, but it looks like I've succeeded." Waters, the writer and director of cult film classics like Pink Flamingos, Hairspray and, most recently, Cecil B. Demented, is in Eugene as keynote speaker for the UO's Queer Film Festival. Despite the fact that Waters prides himself on the fact that his work "has no socially redeeming value," the governor of Maryland has proclaimed Feb. 14-20 John Waters Week. Waters will be stopping in Eugene in between guest appearances on "The Tonight Show," "The Late Show" and other programs. See Thursday and Sunday Calendar.
