presentation:
Even in the age of mass communication, it's often hard to separate fact from fiction and to know what you're not hearing from the mainstream media. Jeff Cohen, director of the media watch organization Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, offers tools to help us separate media fact from media fiction. "During the Cold War, Americans feared weapons of mass destruction. Today," Cohen warns, "Americans have reason to fear weapons of mass distraction À the media." Cohen is co-author of Wizards of Media Oz: Behind the Curtain of Mainstream News and a weekly panelist on the national "Fox NewsWatch" program. Topics that Cohen will address at the Central Presbyterian Church: What are the most censored stories of the year? What was missing from election 2000 coverage? Can corporate media owners and advertisers buy silence? See Monday Calendar.

music:
If you're in the mood to celebrate À as well as cerebrate about À love, check out Eugene Opera's production of Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutti this weekend. As much soap opera as comic opera, Cosi's plot revolves around a test of lovers' faithfulness À its alternative title is "the school for lovers." The lesson is accompanied by some of Mozart's most boisterously delightful music. Jennifer Rivera (pictured) debuts as Doarabella. See Friday Calendar.

music:
The Eugene Symphony Orchestra has engaged one of the Northwest's most fun and interesting bands to join the orchestra in its Valentine's Day pops concert: Portland's Pink Martini. Much more than a neo-lounge act, Pink Martini swirls classical, jazz, cabaret, and Brazilian and Cuban dance rhythms into a frothy confection that's set plenty of Eugeneans dancing before. Martini's pure pop sensibility produces tunes so catchy and universal that one of them has even become one of France's most popular cell phone ringer sounds. Founder and main composer Thomas Lauderdale is a classically trained musician who can easily traverse whatever gap exists between his 10-member dance band and the orchestra. The program for this VD mixes light classical (Ravel's inevitable "Bolero," Lehar, Ned Rorem, Lecuona) with Lauderdale originals and danceable south-of-the-border pop tunes. Somehow it manages to sound neither insipid nor inflated; though still a pops concert, this show should provide some guilt-free fun for lovers of classical music, pop, and dancing. See Wednesday Calendar.
