THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS:

  The Courtesy Clerks
The Courtesy Clerks are just one of six punk rock groups to take the stage at Groucho's this week. "Why such a grandiose gathering?" you ask. It's all to raise money for an underground mag called The Unscene, whose goal is to promote live music in town. Thursday,
Groucho's.

  Adrian Legg
Acoustic guitar virtuoso Legg has often been grouped with such players as Eric Clapton, Leo Kottke, Ry Cooder and Richard Thompson. Acoustic Guitar calls his style "graceful instrumental music laced with melodic and rhythmic hooks." Sound nice? Monday,
WOW Hall.

  Little Charlie & the Nightcats
There's nothing "little" about the rockin' blues sound of Little Charlie and the Nightcats. If you're looking for a party this weekend, look no further. And let's not forget that the rapidly dwindling supply of blues venues makes it even more necessary to support the ones still kicking. Saturday, Wild Duck.

Guitar Gods
Johnson, Legg two highlights this week.

One of the highlights this week is
guitar god Eric Johnson performing at the WOW Hall Feb. 1st with his band Alien Love Child. The band consists of drummer Bill Maddox and bassist Chris Maresh. The Derek Trucks Band opens. Like Adrian Legg, Johnson has shelves full of guitar player awards, and a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental to boot. Trucks, nephew of Allman Bros. drummer Butch Trucks has played lead guitar for Phil Lesh & Friends, and has been playing slide with the Allmans for the past two years, filling the enormous shoes left by Duane. Expect a shredfest.

Leading up to the first are some worthwhile acts. Eugene's The Naysayers have been hard at the recording and recently dropped off some roughs of their big guitar punk, graced by the harmonies of Ed and Spirit Cole. Look for them kicking off the Los Mex Pistols show at the Wild Duck the 25th, followed by Fast Eddie and the Screamers and The Pistols.

Also on the 25th at Groucho's is a benefit show for The Unscene magazine with Courtesy Clerks, YOB, Shortround and Portland's Wadsworth (no relation to our own Lois, as far as I know). The magazine hopes to get people excited about the local scene. Do it.

The same night, dub, world, jazz and electronic musics come together in the ambient work of HIM, who play Sam Bond's Garage.

Ex-Pickett Christy McWilson is at Sam Bond's the 26th. Folk artist Cosy Sheridan is at St. Mary's Episcopal Church the 27th. She's won Kerrville, Telluride's Troubadour contest, played Carnegie Hall and Dr. Demento. The violin trio Ponticello is at Sam Bond's the 27th. Jeff Trott (say, isn't he supposed to have really written all those Sheryl Crow songs?) and Feller open.

Folk multi-instrumentalist Don Conoscenti is at St. Mary's the 28th, and you can listen for him on KRVM's "Acoustic Junction" the 26th. Also on the 28th, John Henry's presents a triple-bill "Super Sunday Showcase," featuring The Sodomites, Arcweld, and, my personal favorite, Vegan Killing Machine.

Acoustic guitar giant Adrian Legg returns to the WOW Hall the 29th, and Tempe prog-rockers Vin-Fizz are at Sam Bond's the 29th. Just in time to greet a Republican administration, The New Deal will play Taylor's the 30th, bringing their spacey electronic "live progressive breakbeat house" down from Toronto way. They've opened a tour for Mad Professor, and they're said to be catching on with the jamband crowds. The 30th also brings Love As Laughter to John Henry's. Sam Jayne's band hails from Issaquah, Wash., same as Modest Mouse, but the late-'99 CD Destination 2000 finds LAL short of the Mouse's breadth of imagination, though Jayne overdrives the vocal mike like you'd expect of a typically noisy Sub Pop band, and frequently indulges his classic-rock leanings.

Chez Ray's checked in to mention their "live Grateful Dead karaoke" every other Thursday, among other events. Sounds great, but how would you distinguish that from everyday life here in Eugene? Look for local acts during the week, perhaps bigger bands on weekends, in a late-night setting.
