music:
If you think vampires are the only thing to come out of Transylvania, think again. Next week, a music festival celebrates the Hungarian and Transylvanian folk music that inspired Bartók. Ökrös Folk Music Ensemble, the leading folk revival band in Hungary, performs with Aladár Csíszár (pictured), one of the last great gypsy fiddlers from Transylvania. At age 64, he is the link to the authentic gypsy musicians of the past. Kálmán Balogh is an internationally celebrated cimbalom (hammered dulcimer) artist who performs traditional gypsy music as well as contemporary folk and jazz. Ágnes Herczku is a rising star on the Budapest folk revival scene. Together, they bring authentic gypsy village music to Eugene. See Tuesday Calendar.

music:
Music or performance art? Kodo, the legendary taiko drummers of Japan, fuse ancient traditions and constantly evolving ideas about the boundless nature of music. The ensemble is committed to a holistic approach to music where body and mind are primed for the physical and spiritual demands of the performance. Ensemble members perform on drums of various sizes (the largest weighs 800 lbs and is carved from a single tree trunk), a string shamisen, flute and bamboo xylophone. An aspiring drummer must complete two years as an apprentice before being considered for probationary membership in the ensemble. Next week's performance at the Hult is Kodo's third Eugene appearance since the ensemble's formation in 1981. Just to get us warmed up, our own Eugene Taiko gives a preconcert performance in the Hult lobby. See Monday Calendar.

music:
What better name for a freckled folksinger than Cosy? And her name is getting out there. The Folk Music Quarterly says, "When Cosy Sheridan is accepting her Grammy, we can all say we knew her when." So far she's won the Telluride Troubadour Contest, Kerrville NewFolk Showcase and Falcon Ridge Songwriter Showcase. Sheridan's latest CD, Anthymn, is a mix of contemplative songs and her trademark social satire. At St. Mary's Episcopal this weekend, she's likely to sing songs about everything from her lonely elderly neighbor to user-friendly Barbie Dolls. Her favorite compliment from a fan? That she's "real." See Saturday Calendar.

Robert Gover shook up the literary world on both sides of the Atlantic in the early 1960s with his irreverent satire, One Hundred Dollar Misunderstanding. The book, about an affluent white
college sophomore's relationship with a black 14-year-old prostitute, was considered too outrageous for American publishers, but was published in France to great acclaim. The book finally gained broad distribution in the U.S. and has remained an off-beat literary classic for 40 years. A new paperback edition was published in October. The author is at Tsunami and the UO Bookstore this week.
