visual arts:
If you can't help feeling a little sorry for the underutilized percussion crew during most symphony concerts, Eugene Symphony's "Night of the Mayas” concert promises to really let 'em rip. The French horns are allowed to shine first in Schumann's Konzerstück for Four Horns, Opus 86. Principal horns from conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya's orchestras in Eugene, Los Angeles and New Zealand are part of the performance. Then it's time for the percussionists to revolt. More than 24 percussion instruments, including congas, conch shells, marimba and others are given a voice in Silvestre Revueltas' Night of the Mayas. Revueltas is a national hero in Mexico for his music that promoted the cause of the working class in the aftermath of the Mexican revolution. If your budget is a little too working class for the evening performance, catch the two free concert previews this week. See Thursday, Jan. 11, Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 18 Calendar.

benefit:
After 20 years on the cutting edge of environmental journalism, eight of them in Eugene, Earth First! Journal is moving to Tuscon. Now, we can't let them leave our fair city without a proper send-off, can we? Folk legend Jim Page, activist musical collective Citizen's Band and Whidby Island singer-songwriter Timothy Hull are joining Danny Dolinger in an appreciation and benefit concert at the WOW Hall. Any proceeds will help the journal defray the costs of the move. See Thursday, Jan. 11 Calendar.

celebration:
Maybe it's the recent dispute about voting practices in Florida, our revisitation of the non-violent protests during the WTO or the spirit of activism that's waking up across the country. Whatever it is, Eugene should be proud to be taking a renewed interested in Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this year. Two groups, Honoring Our New Ethnic Youth and the UO Black Student Union, hold their annual events. Film screenings, receptions and forums are held throughout the week. Economist and nationally syndicated columnist, television and radio commentator Dr. Julianne Malveaux (pictured) makes the case for diversity in the new millennium from the economic point of view in a special event at the Hult. See MLK Day box in Calendar.
