arts:It may seem hard to drag yourself out of the warm, dry house for January's First Friday Art Walk. But those who do will be greatly rewarded. Highlights this month include silk paintings by Eugene artist Merideth Ferrell at Circle of Hands, paintings and installations by Chinese artist Li-Huai at White Lotus and paintings by Eugene artist Dennis Hartley at the Robert Canaga Gallery. Provenance's monthly Mike Denny jazz show has inspired the Robert Canaga Gallery who will feature live jazz by Walkabout this month. The Northwest in Black and White features environmental portraits by Susie Morrill and landscape photography by Justin Williams at the Jacobs Gallery. Kirk and Dwane Richardson by Susie Morrill is shown here. See Friday Calendar. music:The Oregon Festival of American Music is singing the praises of Leonard Bernstein. It's easy to forget that the great American composer has more to his credit than his theater work like On the Town and West Side Story. OFAM explores Bernstein's "serious art music" with a series of concerts next week. Much of Bernstein's music was influenced by the literature that he studied and loved. His Symphony No. 2 was influenced by W.H. Auden's Age of Anxiety and his Serenade for Violin and String Orchestra was influenced by Plato's Symposium. Bernstein himself asserted that reading associate literature before a concert is very important. So read up and come discover a different side of Bernstein. See Thursday, Jan. 11 Calendar. |
