visual art:
As a young girl in Irkutsk, Russia, Mia Pantyukhina gazed upon the sacred images of churches of her homeland. When her family moved to Oregon in 1993 so that Pantyukhina could receive treatment for a congenital disability, she began studying the art of icons. Pantyukhina was particularly interested in authentic medieval techniques used to create the sacred images she remembered from her childhood. Now, as a 16 year old, she's Eugene's resident expert on the technique, which includes the application of egg tempera and gold leaf to wooden panels and takes about four months to complete. This weekend she demonstrates this complex process at Robert Canaga Gallery. See Sunday Calendar.

dance:
If you're thinking of passing on the Sugar Plum Fairy, Clara and the Nutcracker Prince this year because you've seen it all before, think again. The Eugene Ballet Company and Artistic Director Toni Pimble have some surprises in store for you with their production of The Nutcracker. The rumors suggest something about a Christmas tree that transforms into a bat, spooky lights, sunflowers and lady bugs... See Friday Calendar and dance story.

benefit:
If you've ever wanted to thank the people who brought you into this world, now's your chance. Midwives need help preserving their profession within the state of Oregon. Keep Midwifery Alive is a benefit concert featuring roots reggae legend Norma Fraser (pictured), Eugene's own South American and Caribbean folk music band Lo Nuestro and local reggae band People's Choice. Fraser is back in her groove after a 20-year hiatus from music. The singer and songwriter of the acclaimed "First Cut is the Deepest" has recorded with Bob Marley, Ken Boote and The Skatalites, among others. Lo Nuestro plays from its new album, Andando y Bailando, and local reggae band People's Choice also perform for the benefit at the WOW Hall. See Friday Calendar.
