Kid's Calendar music:If you loved her in Satin Love Orchestra, dug her in the Pink Floyd tribute concerts or even remember her from Pyramid Breakfast in the early nineties, you'll be glad to know that Shelley James is still around. And she's going strong with her new band, Musicbox, which includes her husband Cal Coleman, whom many know as the bass player from Satin Love. In honor of the holidays, they're performing songs to be thankful for ... I mean, songs that remind us to be thankful for what we have. In an added bonus, Shelley promises you can dance all those Thanksgiving dinner calories away at the Wild Duck. See Friday Calendar. music:If you can't spend the dreary winter down south, you may as well spend it at the Hult with Fiesta Navidad. The Fiesta stars Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano and its director, Natividad Cano (pictured), who has collaborated with Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville and has also appeared on "The Tonight Show." Dancing to the Mariachi's colorful sounds is Ballet Folklorico Ollin. Formed in 1972, the Ballet is dedicated to preserving Mexico's rich cultural heritage through dance. Together, the Mariachi and Ballet celebrate traditions such as La Posada -- a traditional re-enactment of Mary and Joseph's pilgrimage to Bethlehem. The evening also includes mariachi renditions of American Christmas carols and an audience sing-along. Before and after the performance, concert-goers are invited to stroll through the Hult lobby, which will be converted into a colorful mercado featuring arts and crafts, dancers and vendors — all celebrating the Latino American Christmas tradition. See Thursday, Nov. 30 Calendar. film:Zapadik Films, the local producers of Alchemy, which showed at the Bijou last year, and The Human, hold a film festival featuring Protest in L.A.: Unmasking the 2000 Democratic National Convention and other short films this weekend. The festival is to raise money to help produce Zapadik's latest venture, Rant. The film features seven characters at a party in an artist's warehouse in Portland. As a protest similar to last year's WTO protest breaks out downtown, the characters begin to react to the drama and discuss the various issues surrounding the protest. Starring local activist Tre Arrow, the film attempts to explore various perspectives, from an anarchist's to a conservative's. The evening at the Bijou includes a presentation by Arrow and an open discussion with the filmmakers. See Sunday Calendar. |
