literary arts:
Dubbed the Mother Teresa of animals by Forbes magazine, Ingrid Newkirk has led animal rights campaigns for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for 20 years as both cofounder and president. From coordinating the first arrest in U.S. history of a laboratory animal scientist for animal cruelty to bringing an end to animal testing by companies like General Motors and Revlon, Newkirk has made headlines around the world. Newkirk's latest book, Free the Animals, comes out of a series of "tell all" interviews with Animal Liberation Front leader "Valerie." Newkirk signs copies of Free the Animals this week at Hungry Head. See Friday Calendar.

music:
'Twas the night before Thanksgiving and all through the house, not a creature was stirring ... because they were all at the WOW Hall listening to Johnny Cunningham and Susan McKeown. OK, so it doesn't quite rhyme, but you'll forgive me once you're at the show, entitled "Songs for the Winter Season: The Traditions of Scotland and Ireland." Scottish-born Cunningham has been performing traditional Celtic tunes since the tender age of seven. A world-renowned musician, he has appeared with Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt and Don Henley, among others. Recently he wrote the soundtrack for the Mabou Mines' production of Peter & Wendy, based upon Neverneverland's most famous resident, Peter Pan. Joining Cunningham is the lovely Susan McKeown. Originally from Ireland, McKeown has delighted audiences at each of her previous WOW Hall appearances. She weaves traditional Celtic melodies with smoky jazz and acoustic rock, delivering it all in her smoldering mezzo-soprano. See Wednesday Calendar. – MW

music:
After the Eugene Symphony wages peace on the world Nov. 16 with the premiere of Robert Kyr's The Spirit of Time, you won't want to miss the heroic effort that follows throughout the week at UO. The weapon of choice? Music. UO's Festival of the Millennium: Waging Peace Through the Arts includes three days of music for Indonesian percussion orchestra (gamelan). The gamelan celebration features two legendary figures of the American gamelan movement -- renowned American composer Lou Harrison and Pak Hardja Susilo, a Javanese master musician who founded the first Javanese gamelan in America. Arun Gandhi, grandson of the legendary peace advocate and spiritual leader Mohandas K. Gandhi, gives a lecture and workshop on "Waging Peace Through the Practice on Non-violence." See Thursday through Monday calendar and music story.
