At a time when many independent bookstores are having to close due to the proliferation of mega-stores and the internet, Mother Kali's Bookstore turns 25 this month. And they're throwing a party that will last well into the night. The celebration and fundraiser begins with performances by DanceAbility, The Young Women's Theater Collective, Wymprov, Soromundi and nationally known author Inga Muscio. Or just have some cake and browse at the book booth, women's art show or kidzone. Later in the evening, Holly Near (pictured), singer, songwriter, author and activist who integrates world consciousness, personal and spiritual discovery and theatricality on stage, performs with local singer Irene Farrera. The Deb Cleveland Band closes down the show with an evening of dancing at Agate Hall. See Saturday Calendar. music:In the face of numerous wars and conflicts between nations, states and villages all over the world, UO School of Music composition professor Robert Kyr has decided to use music as a means of encouraging worldwide peace. His ninth symphony, The Spirit of Time, is a musical play in which the four soloists take the roles of different characters throughout history. The story begins in the year 2000 B.C. in Babylon, continues to the fall of Troy, Christ's death and resurrection, the Crusades and ends with the present day, "Into Unknown Light." The final movement uses Archbishop Desmond Tutu's South African "Truth and Reconciliation Commission" as a means of waging peace in the new millennium. The Eugene Symphony's premiere of Kyr's new work is the start of a four-day festival of events entitled "Waging Peace in the New Millennium." Kyr also has a hand in the week's Festival of the Millennium at UO. See Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 16 Calendar. theater:A white canvas painted completely white. A daring minimalist masterpiece or complete phony? Would you buy it? What if it were painted by a famous artist? And what do your answers say about you? Therein lies the heart of "Art." Willamette Repertory Theatre opens their second season at the Hult with Yasmina Reza's new comedy. In the play, Serge buys a white painting for 200,000 francs. But when he shows it off, his best friend laughs. A third friend Yvan is a mediator who can't seem to take a side. Where do you stand? Here's your chance to be an art critic. See Thursday calendar. |
