Season
November means new music

When it rains, it pours; the truism
applies to contemporary music as well as meteorology. Those of us who crave 20th
and 21st century sounds often find ourselves parched for new music -- only to be
inundated a few times a year by a flood of cutting-edge concerts. As with the autumn
rains, this year's new music flood arrives in November with the UO's second Festival
of the Millennium.
Conceived and directed by UO music Professor Robert Kyr, the festival highlights
new music ensembles and encourages performances of contemporary music by local musicians.
Last year, the festival premiered three dozen brand new works and dozens of recent
compositions, and brought the great American composer George Crumb to town for a
residency. It culminated in a spellbinding performance of his masterpiece, "Voice
of the Whale."
This year's model, which runs Nov. 9-20, promises to be even more astonishing than
the first. The torrent commences even before the festival. This Sunday, Nov. 5, the
UO's Faculty Artist Series brings eight of the school's distinguished faculty performers
together to celebrate chamber music of the 20th century, featuring Stravinksy's charming
little "Pastorale," a suite for woodwinds by Milhaud, and American works
by neo-romantic George Rochberg, Livingston Gearhart and Quincy Porter.
Next Thursday, Nov. 9, the FoM, under the theme "Waging Peace through the Arts,"
kicks off with Trio Pacifica (violinist Kathryn Lucktenberg, cellist Steven Pologe,
and pianist Victor Steinhardt) playing trios by Brahms, Mozart and a contemporary
piece, "The Wager at the Eldorado Saloon" by Jon Deak, based on Jack London's
The Call of the Wild.
The following evening, the Oregon Wind Ensemble performs Aaron Copland's "Emblems"
(his only work for band, incorporating elements of jazz, Latin music, and "Amazing
Grace"), Alan Hovhaness's fourth symphony and "Concerto for Wind Orchestra"
by Colin McPhee, who foreshadowed Harrison's later explorations of Indonesian music.
This looks to be a terrific celebration of too-seldom heard North American music.
On Saturday, Nov. 11, Future Music Oregon, the performing wing of the UO's Music
Technology Program, presents a concert of electronic and computer music by guest
composer Chris Chafe of Stanford University, recent UO graduate Joe Waters (now attracting
deserved attention up in Portland), award-winning UO composition student Elyzabeth
Meade, UO faculty member Jeffrey Stolet and others. This looks to be one of the most
attractive concerts in FMO's recent history.
Sunday brings an all-day music marathon featuring some of the richest wellsprings
of local contemporary music: the Oregon Composers Forum, Hundredth Monkey Ensemble,
and Seventh Species. This is one of those come-and-go-as-you-please events that allow
you to sample lots of different styles, from conservative to avant-garde, all of
it created by our own artists.
Just because the weekend's over doesn't mean the tide subsides. On Monday, Nov. 13,
singer Ann Tedards and pianist Gregory Mason perform 20th century music by American
women composers. The next night features a concert that would be the highlight of
any other month: the Ysaye Quartet performing music of Chausson, Debussy (the profoundly
moving violin and piano sonata, one of his last works), and the ravishing Ravel string
quartet. Tasty as they are, these attractive concerts are merely appetizers for the
main courses to follow.
A major part of this year's FoM is another Kyr brainchild, the four-day "Waging
Peace" conference (Nov. 16-19), which features guest speakers Arun Gandhi (grandson
of Mahatma Gandhi) and composer/pacifist Lou Harrison to discuss how peace can be
achieved through nonviolence and cross-cultural collaboration.
Nov. 16-20, the festival's closing stretch, boasts several major events: Kyr's ambitious
ninth symphony, performed by the Eugene Symphony; a concert of Harrison's trailblazing
percussion music; and a festival of gamelan music featuring concerts, workshops,
and presentations related to one of the world's most beautiful and sophisticated
musical traditions. Several gamelan ensembles from around the U.S. will appear, as
will some of the greatest Indonesian masters of this most enchanting music form.
We'll tell you all about it next week.

Project Logic makes
a move; Daddies are back.

The Cherry Poppin'
Daddies swing back into action with a CD release party at the Wow Hall.

Attention all you students, roaming
around campus looking for trouble: Keep your eyes open for more and varied shows
upcoming at your friendly neighborhood bar and grill, Taylor's. Here's something
you'll like -- The Dave Andrews Band, appearing Thursday, Nov. 2. Dave Andrews is
a former member of Calobo, so that should give you a pretty good idea of the musical
direction you'll be experiencing. Local musicians Chris Funk and Brian West from
Ashleigh Flynn's band back him up, as do two Ponticello members.
Another Taylor's show that's sure to please will be DJ Logic's Project Logic, happening
on Sunday. DJ Logic has been a respected collaborator with talented musicians too
numerous to mention, but including Medeski, Martin and Wood, John Scofield and String
Cheese Incident. Now, Project Logic is DJ Logic's chance to shine. He'll be right
out in front giving the cues for a revolving cast of players. This is expert live
turntablism. Somehow Taylor's lured DJ Logic away from The Wild Duck, where he has
performed the last few times he's been through town, so if you've never seen him
here's your chance.
On Friday, WOW Hall will be hosting Big Hippie's CD Release party. Global Chillage
will finally make Eugene's Big Hippie's funkified fusion rock available for all the
great unwashed masses. Locals Courtesy Clerks will punk out the stage, along with
fellow Eugenean's power-pop influenced Welsh Rabbit.
The WOW Hall will host a CD release party of a slightly different caliber on Saturday
as the Cherry Poppin' Daddies once again conquer what is likely the smallest stage
they've played on in quite a while. If you noticed several unfamiliar songs in the
Daddies' Eugene Celebration set, it wasn't just the leftover smoke from Burning Spear.
The Daddies played nearly all the songs from their new CD, Soul Caddy, which wasn't
yet available to the public. It is now and it's as eclectic as we've come to expect
from the Daddies. Steve Perry's manic gyrating and forceful lyrical storytelling
haven't changed a bit, so get ready for a fantastic evening of energetic ska, punk,
glitter rock and, of course, the big swing. Opening up will be California trio OPM,
whose hit song "Heaven is a Halfpipe" is burning up the airwaves. Don't
be entirely fooled by that poppy song. The rest of their music is varied hip-hop,
dub and dancehall.
Fans of local funk band Boogie Patrol Express and The Benjamins will know that former
member Jans Ingber is now the lead vocalist and percussionist with Albuquerque-based
The Motet. They serve up a decidedly African-percussive driven funked up groove at
The Wild Duck. The Porterhouse Quintet open the show.
The Eugene Weekly is proudly co-sponsoring Saturday's Hult Center show featuring
the women of Sweet Honey in the Rock. The five extraordinarily versatile voices of
this Grammy Award winning a capella quintet bring a vibrant female face to uplifting
African spirituals, blues, doo-wop, even reggae, as they take on Bob Marley's Redemption
Song. A powerful voice for social justice, equality, and rights of women and children,
Sweet Honey stand to enter their 25th year of performing the world over. Sweet Honey
also travel with a pre-eminent sign language interpreter, so no one need miss out
on this joyful evening of music.
Tsunami Books will be an interesting place to browse on Sunday, hosting Oregon's
debut concert of "the world's first all female electric harp trio." The
women of California's Electric Angel are also accomplished singers and composers.
Despite being classically trained on their purple, green and magenta electric harps,
they describe their sound as pop and rock "with a twist." I'm intrigued,
but I really want to see those harps. I wonder if their hair matches? Just an idea,
ladies.
Oh yeah, Widespread Panic is playing at the Hult Center Wednesday, for anybody who
has 23 bucks, but you already knew that. Word travels fast in those jam band circles.
