conference:
Whether you're a business owner
trying to find ways to make your business more environmentally and socially responsible or just an ordinary citizen trying to implement these ideals in your own life, the Sustainable Business Symposium promises a stimulating weekend. Frances Moore Lappé, author of Diet For a Small Planet, will join B.J. Harris, Tom Kelly, Sanford Lewis and other nationally noted speakers at the fourth annual conference at UO. Panels and workshops about sustainable business practices and social responsibility continue throughout the weekend. Michael Ableman premieres his film, Beyond Organic, which chronicles his efforts to preserve his 12-acre organic farm in the face of rapid suburban development. The film recently won first place at the Santa Cruz Film Festival. See Friday Calendar.

music:
There's nothing quite like
women on a mission. Grammy Award-winning Sweet Honey in the Rock brings that mission to the Hult Center this week. In 26 years of touring without commercial airplay, Sweet Honey has still managed to be a huge popular success. And it's no wonder -- these ladies are used to success. Two have Ph.D.s, one is a MacArthur Grant winner, one is one of America's foremost sign language interpreters. Their strong and inspirational voices will rise together in everything from blues, gospel and jazz to rap and field holler at their first Eugene concert in four years and their only Northwest appearance this year. The performance will be sign language interpreted. See Saturday Calendar.
