THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS

  Bonnie Bailiff
Singer/songwriter Bailiff makes a couple of performance stops in Eugene—at the Saturday Market at 1pm as well as at Out of the Fog on Friday. Her songs blend folk and blues, and are a mix of "finding your own power" and "laughing at your humanness." Friday,
Out of the Fog.

  Ron Escheté Trio
I know, I know, usually a trio means three people, but musicians aren't always the best at math. For instance, jazz guitarist Escheté plays a seven string guitar (everyone knows guitars only have six) and bassist Todd Johnson pioneered the six string bass (that's two extra strings for that instrument). Should be a great show. Saturday,
Bacari.

  Rubberneck
Your favorite Latin funk band is back in town. This time the party's happening close to campus at Taylor's Bar and Grill. If you're looking for a place to shake your booty this Friday, this would be it. Optional costume idea: dress as your favorite band member. Friday, Taylor's.

Folk and Funk
Plus, poetry overdosing, twirling highlight Halloween week.
By Dave Gingold

Barbara Kessler plays St. Mary's Episcopal Church on Saturday.
.

Hi, and welcome to the all-quotes issue. The words "Psychedelic Boogiegrass from the Colorado High Country" are perhaps second only to "Oh my God! Killer bees!" in getting my feet moving away-ward. But you're not me, are you? You, therefore, might like to check out the Yonder Mountain String Band at the Wild Duck the 27th. Twirl, and God bless you.

PDX and Latin funkers Rubberneck are in the house at Taylor's the 27th. I received a press packet with the sentence "Both bands hail from the same musical hotbed [Southern Florida] that brought forth such acts as Creed, Matchbox 20 and Limp Bizkit." No, I'm not kidding. It really says that, presumably with a straight face.

Barbara Kessler, a fine singer-songwriter on the harder edge of folk, asks in "red yellow blue" on her eponymous CD, "Is it conceivable/that you could overdose/on shitty poetry?" Does the CAHOOTS gang stand by in my driveway on a bi-weekly basis? The Barbara Kessler CD is a fun and spirited bunch of songs that are solid and hummable too, and actually had me wishing for a lyric sheet. Brought to mind Jonatha Brooke, but much less full of shit. Listen to Kessler rock out on "Confession" and "Bridge Mix," perhaps violating some rule of the Boston folk scene. Kessler performs at 7:30 pm Oct. 28th at St. Mary's Episcopal Church.

Also on the 28th, Vancouver, B.C. roots rockers the Bughouse Five are at Sam Bond's. Rebecca Gates, formerly the lead-singing half of the Spinanes, is at Sam Bond's Garage for a solo show the 29th. She's got the lush-and-dreamy thing down and is such a nice gal that her ex-label, Sub Pop, called up to put in a good word for her.

Self-proclaimed "R & B Diva" Dawn is back in her Eugene hometown from the Bay Area for a show at Rock' N Rodeo the 31st. And why not self-anoint? The former Dawn Ryan has everything she needs to climb to the top of the teeny hopper heap: hair bleach, plastic pants, and an E.P., The Break of Dawn, almost violent in its of-the-moment commerciality. Though the record is well produced, its leaden synths never really get a dance groove going, nor give her voice enough room to prove what she can do. If you like what you see them young girls doing on MTV, make this scene.

Amy Rigby is at Sam Bond's the 1st. Her latest and third solo CD is The Sugar Tree, wherein the "New York based indie roots-pop rocker" has relocated to Nashville from NYC, and hooked up with a mess o' them N-ville cats for a strong record. The Sugar Tree rocks with a tasteful country twang, Rigby's real-life diner-counter philosophizing and a voice weathered like Lucinda Williams, without the baby-doll thing. Rigby has opened tours for Warren Zevon and Billy Bragg, and done the Lilith Fair, too.

Although he isn't a Coloradan, you'd be forgiven for mistaking him for one. David Andrews, who spent 10 years with Calobo, has a new record out, Get Me Out Of This Place. The lead quote in his press kit, from the august Two Louies, yet, is "David Andrews is an engaging performer, if not particularly electrifying." It's probably safest not to listen to this one while driving or operating a punch press. Andrews plays Taylor's the 2nd.

If you're stuck for where to wear those fraying Hans and Franz outfits, the WOW Hall shows the 27th, 28th, 29th and 31st are being advertised as Costume Ball, Costume Party, Halloween Party, and Costume Party, in that order, with the Red Elvises and the Brainwashers playing Halloween night. Boo, etc.
