lecture:
William Cronon, one of the most
pivotal and provocative scholars in the field of environmental history, presents a slide-illustrated lecture on "Telling Tales on Canvas: Landscapes of Frontier Change" at UO this week. Cronon, professor of history, geography and environmental studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will explore the ways in which 19th-century American landscape painting reveals how humans perceived and related to nature during that time. Cronon's best-known essay, "The Trouble with Wilderness; or, Getting Back to the Wrong Nature," appears in the 1992 anthology, Under an Open Sky: Rethinking America's Western Past. The controversial piece provoked a major re-thinking of the concept of wilderness among environmentalists and scholars. See Thursday, Oct. 26 Calendar.

dance:
The story: a prince in love
with a princess who is imprisoned as a swan under the spell of an evil sorcerer. The presentation: a brilliant score by Tchaikovsky and choreography that's been considered classic since 1895. Saturday promises to be an enchanting evening with The Eugene Ballet Company's Swan Lake at the Hult Center. Eugene's favorite ballerina, Jennifer Martin (pictured), dances the role of both Odette, the good white swan, and Odile, the evil black swan, and the Swan Queen herself. See Saturday Calendar and dance story.

gatherings:
Can't believe it's already the
most wonderful time of the year? Well, for us mycological types anyway. The Mt. Pisgah Arboretum Mushroom Show and Plant Sale is this weekend. As usual, more than 300 species of wild mushrooms collected from the coast to the Cascades by the Cascade Mycological Society will be on display. Fresh edible mushrooms, cookbooks and other 'shroom paraphernalia will be for sale, the apple cider press will be pumping and, of course, let's not forget the annual Scarecrow Contest. New this year are hayrides around the Arboretum and wine tastings from local vineyards. Be sure to bring any unusual specimens you've found for on-sight identification. See Sunday Calendar.
