Two Girls in Town
What's up besides the big Cuthbert show.
By Vanessa Salvia

Greetings, music lovers! Getting right to it, former Eugene residents turned Portlanders the American Girls have already put out four albums. The third, on Eugene's now defunct Elemental label, Like the Movies, Only Slower, has seen the band make the jump from indie to semi-major status. The move appears to have been successful career-wise, as the new label, Trauma, has been garnering the boys lots of mainstream media attention.

I dissed the Girls a few months ago when Trauma would only "rumor" them to be from "somewhere in the Pacific Northwest." Now, the four boys have returned to Eugene to show all the hometown fans what's what. The album is a deftly catchy effort, held together by the fluid trumpet and a laid back Brit pop feel. The trumpet definitely sets them apart from most other poppy guitar-oriented quartets, giving even the romantic ballads a cheerful quality. Headlining this gig is Limp, who proves you don't have to have a tough name to rock. From the Bay Area, Limp's name might conjure wimpy images, but the band's stage presence is far from flaccid, drawing from punk roots a la NOFX or Lagwagon. Also appearing is Compact 56. This show takes place Thursday, July 13 at the Wild Duck, and it is all ages.

Eugene's Lucid is playing two shows this weekend, the first at Hagen's, the second Sunday night at John Henry's. Lucid's CD starts out with a bouncy jam band guitar riff, but quickly shows its true nature as melodic but heavy groove rock with a fuzzy bass and guitar hero moments.

James Intveld appears Friday at Sam Bond's. His credits include stints as The Blaster's lead guitar player, Dwight Yoakam's upright bassist and back up vocalist for Bob Dylan, and for added hipness factor, he dubbed in Johnny Depp's singing voice in the movie Cry Baby. This acclaimed roots rocker has a new CD called Somewhere Down the Road; it's mostly original, a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll.

If you're looking for an uplifting spiritual message, look no further than the Reggae Angels at WOW Hall Saturday night. The Reggae Angels' inspiration comes from Jah, and they want the world to know the message of "love, unity, respect, and honor." The vocal trio of Fenton Wardle, Cynthia Roots and Alreca Smith fronts an impressive 10-piece band. MC Mystic also appears.

The Wild Duck on Monday features two stellar performers, multi-instrumentalist David Lindley and drummer Wally Ingram. Lindley made a name for himself as an accompanist for Jackson Browne until 1981, then with his own band El Rayo-X. Drawing on global influences, Lindley's music is the very definition of "world." American folk musical traditions combine effortlessly with those of African, Arabic, Asian, Celtic, Malagasy, Turkish and many others for a consistently eclectic performance.

The Indigo Girls, Spearhead and Mrs. Fun are appearing Wednesday at the Cuthbert Amphitheater, but you already knew that.
